San Blas isn't just Cusco's most photogenic neighborhood — it's also one of the best places to eat well, without overspending or risking an upset stomach. Here are our recommendations, after years of walking these streets with our groups.

1. Start with the stairway cafés
San Blas's steep little streets are full of small cafés, many with terraces where you can sit and watch the city while you eat something light. They're a safe bet: they tend to have good customer turnover (tourists and locals alike), which in practice means fresher food.
- Order something simple to try first: a sandwich, a soup, coffee with bread.
- If a place is full of locals at lunchtime, that's a good sign.
2. The market's juice stands
In Cusco, fresh juice stands are an institution. Pick one where you can see them peel and prepare the fruit right in front of you — that gives you peace of mind about hygiene, and lets you try combinations you won't find back home (passion fruit with banana, or juices with maca and pollen).

3. Try some street food, with a bit of judgment
You don't need to avoid street food entirely — just choose wisely:
- Prioritize stalls with steady traffic (food doesn't sit around for hours).
- Avoid anything that's been sitting out in the sun or open air for too long.
- If you have a sensitive stomach, start with something cooked and hot, not raw.
4. For groups or families: fixed-menu restaurants
Many places in San Blas offer a "menú del día" — a starter, a main course, and sometimes dessert, all at a fixed price. It's a great option if you're traveling in a group or with kids, since it simplifies the decision and is usually familiar, home-style cooking.
5. One last tip: ask your guide
If you join our Free Walking Tour, ask your guide where they'd eat that same day — since they're from Cusco, they know the spots that are actually worth it, beyond whatever shows up first online.
